Marketplace 101: Your complete guide

Learn how to connect, inquire and trade through our marketplace

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Our Marketplace connects collectors and creators through verified Certificates of Authenticity.

Each artwork listed with a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) or Certificate of Authenticity Plus (where the digital certificate has a physical link to the work) is authenticated by the creator, giving buyers confidence and ensuring creators benefit from resales.

Whether you’re looking to discover new works or sell pieces from your collection, our marketplace provides a trusted, transparent way to connect.

Our marketplace is built to make art transactions simple and secure.

  • Every listing backed by a COA or COA Plus guarantees authenticity

  • Buyers connect directly with verified owners

  • Creators earn on all resales

Buying and selling on the Marketplace

Sending and receiving inquiries

For Buyers

If you’re interested in a work, you can easily contact the owner through an inquiry.

To make an inquiry:

  • Find the work and click Inquire about availability.

  • A chat window opens with a pre-filled message and your name — you can edit both.

  • Click Send to submit your inquiry. The owner will be notified by email and within Verisart.

  • Access all your active inquiries anytime under Messages in the side menu.

For Sellers

You will be notified by email with any inquiry. Please respond within 48 hours to maintain interest and build trust.

Making and Accepting Offers

Once contact is made, you can discuss pricing and make offers directly in chat.

For Buyers

  • Submit your offer by entering your proposed price (excluding shipping and taxes).

  • You’ll receive updates when the seller responds, accepts, or counters your offer.

  • You and the seller each have 7 days to respond to offers and counteroffers.

For Sellers

  • Accept, decline, or counter any incoming offer.

  • Once both parties agree on a price, the sale automatically moves to the payment and shipping stage.

Payments and Shipping

For Buyers

  • Checkout and Payment

    • Pay securely via Stripe once the offer is accepted.

    • The payment covers the artwork and transaction fee but excludes shipping.

  • Confirm Delivery

    • After receiving the work, click Confirm delivery in chat to release payment to the seller and transfer the certificate.

For Sellers

  • Complete Seller Setup

    • After accepting an offer, you’ll be prompted to add payout and shipping details.

    • You must have an active Stripe Connect account to receive funds.

  • Ship the Artwork

    • If using insured shipping, confirm dispatch through Arta — tracking updates are automatic.

    • If using independent shipping or pick up, mark the item as shipped and share tracking details in chat.

  • Order Completion

    • Both parties receive confirmation once delivery is verified.

    • The certificate of authenticity automatically transfers to the buyer.

Buy Now: Instant Purchases on the Marketplace

In addition to inquiries and offers, some artworks on the Marketplace are available with ‘Buy Now’, allowing buyers to purchase instantly at a fixed price.

For Buyers

If a work has ‘Buy Now’ enabled:

  • Click ‘Buy Now’.

  • Review the fixed price (excluding shipping, taxes, and fees).

  • Complete checkout securely via Stripe.

  • Choose your preferred shipping method:

  • Once you receive the artwork, click Confirm delivery in chat to release payment and transfer the certificate.

You’ll receive email and in-app updates throughout the process.

For Sellers

You can enable ‘Buy Now’ function on a listing through the certify form or by editing a work:

  • Buyers can purchase the work immediately at your set price.

  • No inquiry or offer is required, though chat remains available for coordination.

  • Once a purchase is made, the sale automatically moves to payment and shipping.

  • You’ll be notified by email and within Verisart.

  • Following a purchase, complete your seller setup if prompted (Stripe Connect and shipping details).

  • Ship the artwork using the selected shipping method.

  • Confirm dispatch to keep the transaction on track.

Certificates and Payouts with Buy Now

  • Every ‘Buy Now’ listing must include a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) or COA Plus.

  • After delivery is confirmed:

    • Funds are released to the seller.

    • The Certificate of Authenticity automatically transfers to the buyer.

  • The same Marketplace fees apply as with negotiated sales:

    • 10% total commission (5% Verisart, 5% original creator).

    • If you are the original creator, you receive the full sale amount (excluding platform fees and processing costs).

Fees and payouts

Verisart charges a commission on sales made through the Marketplace. This fee supports platform development and ensures creators receive a share when their works are resold.

Seller fees

When you sell a work through the Marketplace:

  • A 10% commission fee is deducted from the final sale price.

    • 5% goes to Verisart (platform fee)

    • 5% goes to the original creator (creator commission)

  • If you are the original creator selling your own work, you receive the full sale amount (the creator commission does not apply).

  • Applicable VAT is added to the commission fee. Verisart remits tax on its 5% portion.

Example:

If a work sells for $100:

  • $10 total commission fee is applied (5% Verisart, 5% original creator)

  • The seller receives $90 minus any payment processing or shipping costs

Buyer fees

Buyers are responsible for:

  • Artwork price (as agreed by both parties)

  • Shipping and insurance (calculated at checkout through third-party providers)

  • Transaction and credit card fees (automatically added at checkout)

  • Applicable taxes (sales tax or VAT based on shipping address)

Example:

If the artwork price is $100:

  • The buyer may pay around $105–$110 total, including transaction fees and tax

  • Shipping and insurance are calculated separately at checkout
